A large portion of Hollywood films these days is sequels. Spin-offs from original works are also common. This trend is especially noticeable in sci-fi and superhero movies. Some films franchise have as large as 7 or 8 movies in the series. The reason that so many sequels are produced is that hit movies already have a strong fan base. From perspective from production company, it's safer to invest in an existing franchise than to take a risk with a new film, since success is guaranteed to an extent. For filmgoers as well, it's fun to wait with anticipation for a follow-up movie. The side effect is that there are fewer movies with new, original ideas. It seems likely that the trend of sequels will continue in Hollywood for the time being.
What did you think of the movie?
I just thought it was so-so
Really? But it was so exciting!
It was, but I'm sick of sequels.
