Disco music.

In the 1970s, the United States gave birth to two significant developments. The first, a new lifestyle subculture, and the second, a new genre of dance music. Disco music is characterized by its heavy use of electronic instruments like drums and synthesizers. On the other hand, the disco lifestyle was full of trendy, glamorous, and elaborate fashions.

Disco lively musical sounds and energetic dance moves provided an escape from the bleakness of the late 1960s and early 1970s. When the economic boom of the 60s faded, crime rates, unemployment, and inflation soared. In this depressing context, the appeal of disco music and the disco lifestyle was especially strong.

Disco is considered to be the last popular musical movement driven by baby boomers. Its sudden rise to popularity was matched only by its equally sudden demise. Seemingly overnight, disco went from being all the rage to being essentially hated. Despite this, disco has played a key role in the development of electronic dance music, house music, and hip-hop.

Although disco's popularity was relatively short-lived, especially compared to other genres of modern pupular music, it left behind a host of memorable songs. Most notably, disco fascinated artists from other genres like heavy metal and rock and roll who recorded disco versions of their own hit songs.

Talk about how you use the library.

I go to the library pretty often. Korea's top library is the National Library of Korea located in Seoul. It is home to about 10 million books. The library has sections for the humanities, natural science, and literature. There are also areas where you can read periodicals like magazines and newspapers.

The books at the National Library can't be checked out off the premises. You can only read them within the library, and return them when you leave. To make use of the National Library, you need a user's pass. After you've visited a couple of times, you can be issued long-term pass. The National Library is closed on the second and fourth monday of each month.

There is a limit to possessions you can bring into the library. Laptops and writing utensils are allowed. All other personal belongings have to be left in storage lockers before you enter.

What do you ususally do over the weekend?

I often go to the library.

Sure. Reading quietly helps me unwind. I like being able to better myself.

Carboard vs. Corrugated Cartons.

Many people use the word 'carboard' to refer to all types of heavy-duty paper packaging materials. But professionals in the packaging industry know that corrugated cartons are the better choice when it comes to packaging things safely. And while it is true that the two materials share some similarity, there are also significant differences that are worth exploring.

The main difference between carboard and corrugated cartons is that the later is stronger. This increased durability alleviates any concern about the contents of the package being damaged during shipping. Ironically, corrugated cartons do actually contain some carboard, which only adds to the confusion surrounding the two materials.

There's another difference between carboard and corrugated cartons that can be seen with the naked eye. Corrugated cartons contain a special ruffled shape that is sandwiched between the outer liners. It's this ruffled inner layer that gives corrugated cartons their strength.

Taking a quick look at carboard and corrugated cartons might lead some people to believe that the two are the same, with little or no differences between them. However, people with backgrounds in the packaging industry know that corrugated cartons are clearly a better option than carboard especailly for shipping purposes.

Talk about raising pet fish at home.

I wanted to raise a pet because I was spending so much time at home due to COVID-19. But I didn't have the guts to raise a dog and a cat. So, my family settled on fish instead.

Fish are pretty low-maintenance, as long as you provide them with a suitable environment. I get vicarious satisfaction from watching the colorful fish swimming around. Sometimes, I don't know where the time goes as I watch them. (lose track of time) They get really happy when I feed them, and it's really cute

I do have to replace the water in the fish tank on a regular basis. I use tap water that has rest for a day or two. I need to mix the water with the water in the tank to match the temperature. When the fish lay eggs, it's best to separate them to prevent the bigger fish from eating the baby fish.

I feel bad for my kids because they are housebound.

Yeah, I hear you. Try raising a pet at home. The kids get a kick out of it.

I am allergic to animal fur.

Then, why not try raising fish with your kids?

Oh, you mean I should get a fish tank?

Yes. We have pet fish at our house. It's wonderful.

Talk about your newlywed life.

I lived with my parents before I tied the knot. Living with my husband after we got married took some getting used to at first. Two people from different backgrounds had to adjust to each other, so we had to talk it out a lot.

We are a double-income couple, so first we hashed out the details of dividing the household chores. For example, my husband gets off work earlier, so he cooks dinner. I clean up and do the dishes. After dinner, we watch TV together, or enjoy alone time separately.

On weekends, we do the housework that we put off and clean the house thoroughly. Then, we cook something delicious or play games together. Staying indoors because of COVID-19 has made us feel pent-up, but I am happy to spend my days at home with my husband.

How long has it been since you tied the knot?

It's been 2 months now.

Oh, so you're still newlyweds.

That's right. It still hasn't really sunk in.

You must be making a lot of adjustments to live together.

Sure. We come from different backgrounds. Sometimes we don't see eye to eye.

Talk about ransomware.

Ransomware is a compound word, combining ransom and software. It causes computer systems to be infected with malicious code. Then, it blocks off access and demands a ransom. An affected computer is bricked, so the user could really shoulder a loss.

Some ransomeware uses data encryption to prevent access to the stored data. Other types simply lock up the computer and show instruction for how to pay up.

Ransomware is among the most dangerous types of computer viruses. Often, they are immute to vaccines. This means users must be extra-careful. You should never, under any circumstances, download an app or a program you can't trust. It's also important to regularly update vaccine programs.

My computer has been infected with ransomware.

Really? How did that happen?

It was my bad. I downloaded something I shouldn't have.

Does that mean the virus bricked your laptop?

Yeah. They're demanding a ransom of over 1,000 dollars to unlock it.

That's a big problem. You must be at your wit's end.

Talk about playgrounds.

Apartment complexes usually have one or two playgrounds. The most common types of playground equipment are swings and seesaws. Slides, roundabouts, and jungle gyms are also common. Some playgounds have monkey bars for kids to hang from.

The ground in some playgronds is covered in sand. Children play house in the sand. Some playgrounds built more recently use soft rubber surfacing instead of sand. Kids run around playing games like tag or hide-and-seek at playgrounds. Sometimes they lose their balance and fall over, so it's important for the ground to prevent injuries.

Most playgrounds are equipped with security cameras. Sometimes, each household can check the CCTV feed on monitors at home.

When you see a playground, doen't it remind you of old times?

Of course it does.

I remember running around and having a blast every day when I was young.

That's right. I have a lot of fond memories, too.

I also remember taking a spill and hurting my leg.

Still, back then we were able to pick ourselves up right away.

New COVID-19 rules make international travel tougher.

Since COVID-19 was first recognized in December 2019, new variants of the virus are prompting governments around the world to enact stronger international travel restrictions. These new restrictions are further complication what had already become a nearly impossible feat. The consequences of these changes have been felt in nearly all corners of the world.

Global air traffic has been severely affected by many different factors, including the complex rules that must be followed by people who still need to travel overseas. In some instances, demand for international travel has plummeted nearly 90% according to agencies that track such data. Looking toward the future, even the most optimistic outlooks leave little to be positive about.

In the U.S., airlines who have to implement these rules have asked the goverment for temporary exemptions from the country's new policies. The U.S. government however has declined these requests, citing the need for a testing program that is as robust as possible to keep out new strains of the virus.

The U.S. State Department has urged its citizens to forgo international travel in case they are unable to obtain tests and medical care in other countries. For those people who are already overseas, the U.S. government warns that returing home will become increasingly difficult because of the impact of new strains of coronavirus.

Talk about the Republic of Korea Marine Corps.

The Republic of Korea Marine Corps was founded on April 15, 1949. The branch was created because the need emerged for troops that could perform landing missions. It was a small branch at first, with only 380 soldiers. But they overcame difficulties and strenghtened their foundation, based on the tough Marine spirit.

The Marines fought bravely during the Korean War, earning the nickname 'ghost killers.' They continued to distinguish themselves later on as they were deployed in the Vietnam War.

The Marines were disbanded in 1973 due to a military reorganization. But the Headquarters of the Republic of Korea Marine Corps was reestablished in November of 1987, and the Marine Corps commandant's right to command was restored in 1990. Korea's Marine Corps today is comprised of the best of the best. They perform an important role on the front lines of national security.

Is your son currently serving in the military?

Yes. He's serving in the Marine Corps.

His father is a Marine man, so he volunteered for the Marines, too.

I see. How long has he been in the military?

It's been about 8 months. He will be discharged from service early next year.
