Farmers market.
A farmers market is a physical retial marketplace where farmers sell food directly to consumers. They may be indoors or outdoors, and are typically comprised of booths, tables or stands where farmers sell their produce, meat and plants. Sometimes, prepared foods and beverages are also for sale.
Farmers markets are distinguished from public markets, which are usually housed in permanet structures, open year-round, and also offer a variety of non-food products. Farmers markets exist in many countries around the world and reflect the local culture and economy. Because of this, they are often popular destinations for tourists, in addition to serving the local community.
Farmers markets offer a number of benefits to both vendors and consumers. Farmers can earn increased profits over selling to wholesaler or large grocery chains. By selling directly to consumers, produce often needs less handling. Some farmers also prefer the simplicity, transparency and independence of selling directly to consumers.
Consumers favor farmers markets for the fresher seasonal foods. Items such as organic foods, and free-range eggs and poultry are often available at the marekts. The markets are also a place to enjoy an outdoor walk while getting groceries. Evidence seems to show that overall prices at a farmers market are lower than traditional markets, because there are fewer middlemen.
