In Korean traditional culture, ancestors are highly respected. Traditional memorial called jesa are often held to honor ancestors. People prepare food with great care, and bow to a portrait of the deceased. These ancestral rites are held based on the lunar calendar. There are many rules of conduct for these ceremonies. on major family holidays, people take part in similar rituals called charye. However, some people don't hold the ceremonies at all for religious reasons. These memorial customs are fading away because more people are opting not to hod them. Still, it is an integral part of Korean culture.
